12 Steps to Christian Recovery

“Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of GOD as we understood Him.”

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol… that our lives had become unmanageable.

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” Romans 7:18

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

“…My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness…” 2 Corinthians 12:9

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of GOD as we understood Him.

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13 and Luke 9:23

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

“Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.” Lamentations 3:40

5. Admitted to GOD, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed…” James 5:16

6. We’re entirely ready to have GOD remove all these defects of character.

“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” Isaiah 1:19

7. Humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

“23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” Matthew 5:23-24

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Luke 6:38

“…through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with GOD… …praying only for knowledge of His will, and the power to carry that out.”

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” Romans 12:3

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with GOD as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will, and the power to carry that out.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14 and Colossians 3:16

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and practice these principles in all our affairs.

“1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:1-2
